Elnido.

Elnido is a simple birdhouse that blends with nature and wants to be part of its cycles. It is made out of basic, natural and biodegradable materials that can be easily found worldwide, and it is manufactured using standard carpenter tools. Therefore there is no resin, no plastic element or metal parts.

This birdhouse is a statement favouring sustainability and circular economy, inspired by ancient and sustainable craft. The house is manufactured with materials that come directly from nature. It is placed in the forest for the thriving of the birds, checked periodically, repaired and cleaned when necessary and left in nature when its life ends. The Japanese technique of the”Komomaki” deeply inspired this idea of integrating the house into a life cycle. These biodegradable straw belts are placed around the tree trunk as a warm place for the caterpillars to spend the winter. They are burned in spring before the caterpillars emerge from hibernation to eat the tree leaves, and afterwards, the ashes are used as fertiliser.

Regarding its design, the piece was made to be easily assembled and disassembled during the seasonal cleaning, and its simple components were created to encourage reparations. The construction is based on old barrel construction’s principles, without glue and using the tensions of the wood to keep the components together.
